The paper reviews some main trends in linguistics and discusses their relationship with the translation studies development. Among the relevent linguistic theories to translation studies the most remarkable are structuralism, generative grammar, Sapir and Whorf’s hypothesis, the socio-cultural view on language. Each view has its own influence on the development of the research into the nature of translation. With the move toward context-based linguistic research, linguistics has been providing new insights into the nature of this special type of human language communication. In turn, translation studies also contribute to linguistics by giving more evidences and answers to the question of the appropriateness of different linguistic trends.
